The Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority, International Coffee Organization and IACO collaborated to hold an African coffee statistical workshop on 26-27 July 2025 at Coffee Training Center in Addis Ababa.
The workshop has mainly focused on providing relevant and accurate coffee statistics from Africa with a particular focus on submitting accurate and complete monthly, quarterly and annual statistical reports including certificates of origin in accordance with the ICO’s rules on statistics. The workshop was attended by high-ranking officials, including D/r venusia Nogueira, Executive Director of ICO, H.E Ambassador Solomon Ruthega, secretary general of IACO, H.E Adugna Debela (PHD) Director General of Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority.
As stated during the ceremony, the workshop is part of the implementation of one of the objectives of the ICA 2007 and approved programme of activities for 2024-25 of the ICO and strategic objective 3 (SO3) of IACO.
The program was officially opened by Dr. Adugna Debella, Director General of the Ethiopian Coffee and Tea Authority. Accurate and relevant coffee statistics are crucial for informed decision-making across the entire coffee supply chain, from farm to cup. These statistics enable producers, roasters, retailers, and consumers to understand market trends, optimize operations, ensure sustainability and share experiences.
The Director General in his speech mentioned that, the high record of Ethiopian coffee export in terms of both volume and foreign exchange generated. According to him, this success is not possible without the support of all stake holders in the value chain and partners like UNIDO, ICO and other governmental & non- governmental organizations.
H.E Ambassador Solomon Ruthega in his part said that, The Inter-African Coffee Organization (IACO) is focused on building stronger African institutional capacity to produce high-quality data. This data is intended to be a foundation for informed policy decisions, investment strategies, and trade initiatives within the African continent.
He further noted that the workshop will contribute directly to the implementation of this year program of IACO’s activities with expected outcome including improved market transparency, data harmonization for the continent and consolidation of IACO’S role as the continental leader in Africa on coffee statistics.
D/r Vanusia Nogueira, also said that 'we are here today is to share experience among different African countries and discuss about common challenges in the coffee sector, especially related to data collection and usage.' According to her, Information is key and strategic to all.
